I hope these holidays are your best yet! I guess I'll take the time to update you on what is going on in my life, as there are some big changes in the near future. Last week I graduated from Brigham Young University Idaho with a Bachelors degree in Studio Art. It feels so good to be DONE. I'll miss all my friends a ton, but its good to be moving on. And moving on I am...down to Salt Lake City. I've got an apt in Holladay, one roommate, and he's CLEAN! Its a really nice place. In Jan it will be go go go with the new lab down in Orem...Canle International as it's affectionately being named (we went with the most ambiguous name in order to dissuade burglars from breaking into the lab and stealing our thousands of dollars worth of equipment). Jonathan Canlas is the man behind the operation and Tavis Johnson and I will be managing the developing and scanning of photographers film. I'm super stoked to see how that gets going. Also, I bought a seasons pass at snowbird, I have two friends that are unemployed and also have passes, so we will be doing a lot of skiing and snowboarding. Hit me up if you want to go!

So some big changes in 2011! I'll have a new blog, new website, and a whole new way to view all that portfolio stuff that has been hidden in the recesses of my hard drives for the past year or so. I can't wait to get everything organized. That will be the first big project of 2011. Also, I plan on doing a bit of traveling. Right now Mexico in Feb is looking like a real possibility. Max Low is now the proud owner of a '96 Ford Explorer that is registered in Mexico for the next six months...so we plan on putting that to use. We're thinking Yucatan road trip? Also I will be heading out to Seattle in April to help out with Film Is Not Dead. It is always the raddest time hanging out with Jonathan Canlas and the FIND posse. I can't wait for that. Places I hope to visit this year?? Obviously San Francisco, New York, it's been far too long since I've been to either of those cities. I want to go back to Hawaii so bad that sometimes I physically hurt inside, so we'll see if that happens. I want to go back there with friends, or a friend. I've come to decide that traveling by yourself, living the gypsy lifestyle is all well and good, but unless you have people there to share the memories with, they start to fade, and they aren't worth much over the years.

My Mom does her share of worrying about my current bachelor status and reminds me repeatedly that there are plenty of nice marryable girls down in UT, so I'm sure I will keep busy finding a girl that I want to keep :) But really, I am excited to move to a new place and start living. I appreciate all of you. You all mean a lot to me more than you know. May you have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year :)

Lets Take a Trip Back...

...To before film was born...Ok so I guess technically film was born. On glass plates. Turns out I'm not the first photographer in my family. When my mom went to visit our Aunt Nony in Holland Aunt Nony started pulling out photographs that her Grandpa had taken during his career as a photographer. Of course like most photographers (at least...the good ones) their main subjects always end up being their families. Hence we have a pretty good photographic record of the Vanderstock family during the turn of the century. A time when it was fairly rare to have a LOT of photos taken of you and your family. My mom asked Aunt Nony if there were any photos that she could have to take back and show the cousins in Canada, and the following are the photos that Aunt Nony gave my mom, who has in turn...handed over to me. I can't wait to go back to Holland and look at the rest of these photos, and perhaps be given an opportunity to take part in the preservation and archiving of them, so that we can enjoy them for many years to come! Most of the following are albumen prints.

So my Great Great Grandpa Vanderstock lived in Leiden, Netherlands. He was a member of the Dutch army in the late 1800's.

When he was done with the army, he studied photography and eventually became a fairly well known photographer among the well to do people of Leiden. This is his business card:

Here is a picture of the man himself.

Like I said...he liked to take photos of his family. Here are one of the RARE ones where he is actually in the photo (this is totally posed):

This is the house that he raised his 6 kids in. 5 girls and one boy. He also ran his business out of his home....yes, those windows are facing north :)

Often his daughters became models for small cards that were customarily given out to guests when they visited:

Even they had babies melt down. Its funny that he still made the print of this one...I guess maybe it was his last plate and he was like "Whatever...another family photo with me not in it"

He loved to travel. This is a post card from when he visited new york in 1929. And yes...this is his actual hand writing on the back. Any of you read dutch?

The rest of these are pictures of his family as well as his children. But I want you to look closely at these! It is INSANE how crisp some of these shots are. And the lighting is just soft and buttery on a few. Think about the photos that were being taken in the turn of the century over here in america and canada....they were grungy...dirty...and well yeah. You get the idea. But these show us a little glimpse of where European photography was at the turn of the century. Pretty cool. Here are the last of the images, in no particular order.

The girl on the left of this photo looks EXACTLY like my mom did at this age!!

This next one is a normal grad photo for a student at the University of Leiden. This is what they wore. My Great Grandpa hand tinted this.

Some Instant Film

These were all shot on my Graflex 4x5 using FP-100C Instant film. Bleached neg scans. Took me a little while to dial in the results (and about a pack of film) but I think I have it down. More to come.

Shot a little 4x5 while we were camping...I've been doing a 4x5 independent study for my last semester. Sort of a BFA project, without the show at the end (hopefully I'll find somewhere to do a show down the road) but I've been shooting a bunch of 4x5 wherever I go. Mostly it's been portraits, but once in a while I try out the landscape. I love how the tilt makes things look miniature. Speaking of tilt shift, have you guys seen "The Social Network"? Right around the middle of the movie there is an AMAZING sequence, the Henley races shot tilted to Grieg's "in the Hall of The Mountain King"....it was so good. Here's a link if you wanna watch. This girl! For best bouquet grab I've ever seen at a wedding. Congratulations to her, she will be receiving nothing for her efforts, but the satisfaction that she has knowing that she dove onto the floor in 3 inch heels and a dress to win that bouquet will last her a lifetime. Yup, they're as big as I thought they would be. Freaking huge. It was cool to finally visit one of Canada's national wonders that I have heard so much about! The surrounding area has turned into a weird sort of carnival filled with restaurants, oddity shops, hotels and whatever else you can think of packing into a three mile radius. It was fairly interesting. A HUGE thanks to Margaret and Joey (who you will be seeing on here in a week or so) for taking the time to show me around their home province! And just look at this image above....see how you can see detail in the light and in the shadows? Mmmm...yup. That's film for ya. Love film.

This place is like 35 minutes from where I grew up, and is seriously one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Its been far too long

Hello all :) It has been a while. Let me describe the last 7 weeks to you in a nutshell. I finished school and headed down to San Diego to hang out with Jonathan Canlas and the Film is Not Dead peeps. It was amazing, and there will be photos posted (more than what is already on here) and then I headed back up to Utah. Developing and scanning ensued, along with a lot of relaxation. After that it was back to Canada! By complete coincidence, I was able to get a ride out to Kelowna BC to visit my good friends Megan and Andrew! It was the weekend of their ONE YEAR anniversary and I had to be there to celebrate! You might remember these guys, they jumped off a cliff at Waimea in their full wedding getup! We enjoyed a weekend at the lake, and tons of great food. after arriving home and slightly unpacking, I headed out to live in the Waterton National Park with Max, Jon and Leigh for a week and help out at Wieners of Waterton. It was so great to be in the wilderness of my own back yard! While I was around home I shot Karli and Garretts wedding. It was a beautiful day and the pictures are going to be so good. After that week was over, I hopped on a plane and it was out to Toronto to shoot Margaret and Joey's wedding. It was SO COOL to finally get to visit Toronto! I've never been to eastern Canada and so they tried to show me as much of it as they could in between packing and getting ready for the wedding! They were such gracious hosts. We made it to Niagra Falls, up to the TOP of the CN Tower, and ate at one of the craziest chinese food restaurants I've ever been to. The wedding was a party to say the least (I'm pretty sure we were still there dancing at 1:30 am). Ok, this post is getting a little long, I still have more to write about the last week of my break, but it can be discussed in a post of its own. But for now, I APOLOGIZE for being gone so long. Please forgive me. I have tons of stuff to blog. As for now I will leave you with a shot from FIND in San Diego. This was shot on my Crown Graphic 4x5. Can I just tell you how much I love it?? Film Baby....film.

Bigfork Montana

A couple friends and I drove up to Montana over the fourth of July weekend and met up with ALL my Canadian friends and partied it up at Echo lake. It would have been one amazing weekend, had it not rained almost the ENTIRE time. Oh, and the fact that we hit a deer at 4 in the morning, only 15 miles from our final destination. Bummer. Although it was a new experience. I've never hit a deer before. And we straight up killed that thing. It went flying over the hood of the van, and as you can see, did some pretty good damage to Blakes parents van. So not many photos were taken, BUT we did go out for a couple hours when the rain subsided, and here are a couple of those shots. Even though it rained, I still loved the trip. A huge thanks to the Macdonalds, and Lows for allowing us to invade their cabins for the weekend!

San Diego-Union Station and Harbor

The train between San Diego and LA is amazingly convenient. I took it twice last week while I was down there. The second time, I arrived a little early to the station, so I took the time to wander down to the waterfront and have a look at the war memorials they have down there, as well as the USS Midway Museum. It was AWESOME. I'm so glad I went. I love being a solo tourist because I can take as much time as I want to do what I want. I guess that is good, because I feel like most of the time I am a solo tourist. Anyways, I've been shooting all my travels on my Olympus OM-1 35mm and I have been loving the results.

Still got love for the Contax

Sooooo I've been shooting my new 4x5 a LOT lately, but on my last shoot, I happened to have the Contax 645 with me, and there was a roll in there that I needed to finish up. So I shot it and this is what I got. Thanks to Erin for being a great model. I love the Contax.

A week or so ago I FINALLY got my hands on a 4x5 field camera. This camera was the workhorse camera for sports photographers and reporters from the 1930's through the 60's. It's built like a tank and made to last. You've all seen it in movies....you just don't know it. Remember this guy?

Yeah you do. That's the camera. This is a better view....minus the flash (which I don't have)

Interesting sidenote...the flash grip was what the team over at Lucas Arts used to make Lukes lightsaber back in the 70's. See the resemblance?

(Fanboys drool in unison).....But I digress. I'm bringing it to San Diego this weekend to shoot at Jonathan Canlas' workshop FILM IS NOT DEAD and I don't want to look like an idiot and not know how my camera works. So I've been shooting it a little bit and getting everything dialed in. So here are a few of the first shots from the camera!

Back in February when I was in Vancouver for the Olympics, my good friend Katie, and I decided to go on a nice little walk in Stanley Park. Needless to say we got lost and ended up on a road that went ENTIRELY around the peninsula. So after a light 8.3km stroll...we hustled to the bus stop to catch the Hockey Final!

I carried around my Contax to capture what ended up being a historic weekend for Canada and an experience that I will treasure forever. ...this is how I feel after being in the lab for 8 hours straight developing and scanning not one but TWO weddings. But nothing is better than when I get home, it's 3 am, and I still plug in that hard drive and go through all the images...and there's a smile on my face the whole time. So this isn't a sad or angry post, but a happy one! Because sometimes, I get rad images like these. A groom and his nephew. Hangin out while I shoot family formals. And they're both just lovin' it.

I can't wait to share the rest of these images with everyone. This is from the Orr wedding that I shot a couple weeks ago. It's not very often that I get to take photos of my family, so all of these are precious to me. More soon!!

Danny & Kate: April. Las Vegas NV

This has probably been the longest I've gone without a blog post and for that I am SORRY!! Last month I had the wonderful privilege of heading out to Las Vegas to shoot Danny and Kate's wedding. There were plenty of familiar faces there from school and a great time was had by all. It was the first time I've shot on a dry lake bed and let me tell you it was like 90 degrees on there and the wind was HOWLING. It made for some pretty epic pictures. So for some reason I had it in my mind that the Contax syncs at 250th of a second not 125th. Eeeeerrrrggh. Well this is a lesson to all you aspiring studio photographers. Get your sync speed right especially if you're shooting film because this is what your photos look like if you're wrong. Such a dumb mistake and one I will never make again.

I woke up this morning to snow....again...Just when I thought spring was here and things were going to start warming up! So immediately I started going through my hawaii photos. These two shots were shot on Kodak bw 400cn wth a Contax 645 and are from when I was Purnell wedding on the North Shore of Oahu last summer. I love that place with all my heart.

Last sunday on our way down to WPPI in Las Vegas we stopped a couple times to shoot this 7X17 view camera that I borrowed from the photography Department. That's right. SEVEN BY SEVENTEEN! You should see these Negatives. They are HUGE!! Anyways, I can't wait to get back and develop them and post them for all your enjoyment and amusement. Until then...you'll just have to settle on this image of the actual camera while we were shooting it. More on WPPI later.

This Blog post is coming straight to you from WPPI in Las Vegas. For those of you who don't know what that is, it's a HUGE wedding photographers conference that is held every year. This is my first year going and I owe a HUGE thank you to Jonathan Canlas for making this trip possible. It has seriously been a wild time. Every night I get home and empty my pockets of the business cards collected that day. I have met so many interesting and creative people. Many of which I hope to work with in the future. Anyways, tomorrow is the last day. I cant wait for Jonathan's platform speech. It's going to be AWESOME. For those of you who are still trying to decide whether to go, GO! It will be worth it. Tomorrow afternoon at 2:30. As far as the Image above, I thought I'd share it with you. This is a shot from Emma and Matt's engagements that I shot over 4 months ago up at park city. It was the quickest engagement shoot I've ever done. EVER. Were talking like 13 minutes. There was a tiny break in the slush/rain and we ran out and took advantage of it. So here ya go.

As seen in a couple posts previous I shot the Patton/Prete family when I was home for Christmas. I decided to hold off on these photos and give them a post of their own. A HUGE congrats is in order to Dani and Jordan as baby boy Haylen J Henrie was born on the 22 January 7lb 9oz!!

Patton/Prete Family

Over Christmas I had the chance to get together with my good friends the Patton/Prete crew. I've known these guys for years and it was so fun to take their pictures. Pull Through Darryl Benefit Concert

This last Boxing day..(Its a British/Canadian Holiday) there was a benefit concert that I had the opportunity to be a small part of. The concert was called "Pull Through Darryl." Long story short, a good friend of our family was in a snowmobiling accident when he was riding in a contest in the states. He was severely injured and his medical bills are through the roof. If you would like to read a little more of his story click here. He has since been transferred to a Vancouver care facility. He has been diagnosed as a paraplegic, and is finding out new ways to do stunts on his wheelchair :)

The Concert was a success with many numbers being performed by Darryl's family and friends. I was able to shoot the entire thing on my Mamiya Universal Instant Camera. I know what you're thinking...

"A sunset?? Really?? Didn't he get those out of his system..like...when he was discovering photography??"

My answer is No. Not these sunsets. This is a completely unique sunset that I can only find in Southern Alberta. I've never seen a place with such vast skies. In the distance you can see the rocky mountains silhouetted. They are always there. It's sort of comforting. When I'm away for too long I miss those mountains in the west. So for those of you who are from Southern Alberta, this is familiar to you. For those of you who aren't, this is my home.

Details From a Sundance Wedding

A couple of months ago I had the privilege of assisting Jonathan Canlas with a wedding he was shooting up in Sundance, UT. I had literally just gotten back from shooting a wedding in the Dominican Republic! It was a good time as we were joined for the day by our good friend Shannon Mocabee , who was doing a one on one "mentor session" with Jonathan that day. Whenever I'm back in Canada, I make sure to stop by and say hi to the dudes at Mcbain Camera. Last time I was there I was able to snap a few instant shots on my Mamiya Universal. Below you have Danny Ponomar, who runs the place, and below him is Jason Hedley who takes advantage of the plethora of gear that is around him all day, every day. These guys are both amazing photographers, and I'm glad to say that I know them!

Here are some shots from a fantastic LA wedding I was able to assist Jonathan Canlas with. It was held at the Smog Shoppe in Culver City. Its hard to believe this place is an old garage that has been converted into a RAD space for hosting weddings and other events.

They chose to have a small ceremony at the glorious RIU Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. As you can see this place is a palace, and their wedding was beautiful! Over the past four months I have been interning and traveling all over the United States with Jonathan Canlas. If there could be one theme for this internship...it would be food.
